Direct analytical reads of row-oriented files on local disks or shared filesystems, including DBF / xBase, CSV, and other text formats. DBF accounts for the early history of this category, beginning with modeled cross-product use in 1984; text-file allocations enter from 1993.

DBF dialects, memo files, indexes, and application logic limit compatibility. Native Access and FileMaker files stay in desktop-native storage. Linking to an existing file counts here; querying a copy imported into a native database counts with that native store.
