S3 launched in March 2006. Hadoop’s experimental S3 filesystem was implemented that December and shipped in January 2007. It stored Hadoop file blocks as objects, rather than querying ordinary S3 files directly. The 0.01% slice is an illustrative allowance for early use, not a measured adoption share.
