# Local/shared row files · storage · 1988

Revision 1 (11 October 2026) · Modeled snapshot · through 8 October 2026.

All figures are research-informed estimates of analytical activity. Significant errors may remain; decimal places do not imply measurement precision.

4.8% of the full storage layer.

[Local/shared row files](https://history.columnar.tech/technologies/storage/legacy-local.md): historical names and annual shares.

Direct analytical reads of row-oriented files on local disks or shared filesystems, including DBF / xBase, CSV, and other text formats. DBF accounts for the early history of this category, beginning with modeled cross-product use in 1984; text-file allocations enter from 1993.

DBF dialects, memo files, indexes, and application logic limit compatibility. Native Access and FileMaker files stay in desktop-native storage. Linking to an existing file counts here; querying a copy imported into a native database counts with that native store.

## Contributions by compute engine
